Hotel access control: card, mobile key or PIN?

Three ways to open a door

• Card: the most widespread and familiar to guests. It's encoded at reception for the stay and expires automatically.
• Mobile key: the guest opens the door with their phone. It enables online check-in and avoids queues, but the lock system and hotel software must support it.
• PIN: practical for self check-in, apartments and secondary entrances.

Standalone or online locks

Standalone locks run on batteries and store permissions on the card: they're cheaper to install. Online locks communicate with the central system: you can revoke a card instantly, see door status and receive alerts. The choice depends on the size of the hotel and the level of control you want.

Not just guest rooms

A good project also covers:

• The main entrance and night access.
• Staff areas: storerooms, kitchen, plant room, server rack.
• Garage, spa or gym with time schedules.
• An event log showing who went in and when.

Integration with hotel management

Integration with the front-desk software (PMS) saves steps and errors, but depends on the access system manufacturer and the PMS. Before choosing, check which integrations genuinely exist.

And with the smart room

Access control can activate the room: on entry the welcome lighting comes on and the climate switches to comfort; on exit, to energy saving. That's where integration with room automation is most noticeable.
