What is Matter and how does it affect home automation?

Matter aims to end the question "is it compatible with my system?". Here's what it is and what it means for a professional installation.

What it is

Matter is a connectivity standard for smart home devices, led by the Connectivity Standards Alliance with major technology companies on board. The goal is for a certified device to work across different ecosystems and assistants.

How it works

  • It runs over WiFi, Ethernet and Thread (a low-power network for sensors).
  • It prioritises local control, without relying on the cloud for every command.
  • The same device can be linked to several apps at once.

What about KNX or Loxone?

Matter is mainly aimed at consumer devices. Professional systems can connect to it through gateways or manufacturer integrations, depending on the case. Wired infrastructure remains the most robust foundation for a home.

What to expect

More freedom to add consumer devices (plugs, bulbs, sensors) alongside a professional installation, provided the network is well designed and real compatibility is checked.
