UPS: protecting your network, NAS and alarm from power cuts

A momentary power cut can reboot the router, stop the cameras or damage a NAS. A UPS prevents it at very little cost.

What it is

A UPS (uninterruptible power supply) is a battery unit that keeps equipment running during a power cut and protects it from surges and dips.

What to connect

  • Router, firewall and switches (especially PoE switches powering cameras and WiFi).
  • NAS and servers.
  • Camera recorder.
  • POS and IP phones in businesses.

Types

  • Line-interactive: good value for network and small equipment.
  • Online (double conversion): maximum protection for critical equipment.

Sizing

Add up the equipment's power draw and decide how much runtime you want: a few minutes to ride through blips, or longer to keep cameras and connectivity going through a long outage.

Clean shutdown

A network-connected UPS can tell the NAS to shut down properly before the battery runs out.

Maintenance

Batteries have a limited life and need checking and replacing periodically.

Frequently asked questions

Does the alarm need a UPS?

Professional alarms already have a battery. The UPS keeps the network and cameras running.
