Backup 4G/5G connection for businesses

If the main connection goes down, many businesses grind to a halt: payments, orders, bookings and cameras. An automatic backup connection is cheap insurance.

What depends on the internet in a business

  • Payment terminals and cloud POS.
  • Bookings, online orders and delivery.
  • IP telephony.
  • Cameras and alarm with remote alerts.
  • Management and invoicing software.

How a backup connection works

A dual-WAN router (fibre + mobile) or an additional 4G/5G router is installed. If the fibre fails, traffic switches automatically to the mobile network and switches back when it returns. Backup can be limited to critical services, such as the POS, to avoid using data unnecessarily.

An important point in Andorra

Andorra Telecom operates both the fibre and the mobile network. A backup connection gives you diversity of medium (if the fibre cable to your premises is cut, mobile keeps working), but it doesn't protect against a network-wide operator outage. For most businesses, the most common risk is local: building works, equipment faults or cuts in the street.

Don't forget power

A small UPS for the router, switch and POS stops a brief power blip from rebooting the whole network mid-service.

Frequently asked questions

Is a backup connection expensive?

Usually you only need one device and a modest data plan, as it's only used when the main line fails.
