Analogue gateways: keeping existing equipment
Moving to IP telephony doesn't mean throwing out everything that works. With an adapter or gateway, analogue equipment connects to the new phone system.
What a gateway is
It's a device that turns an analogue line or phone into an IP extension (or the other way round). There are small one- or two-port adapters and multi-port gateways for buildings with existing phone cabling.
When it's used
- Hotels with analogue room phones and phone cabling in good condition.
- Fax machines or terminals that are still needed.
- Other analogue equipment, such as intercoms or special phones, where compatible.
- Analogue lines from the operator that need connecting to the IP phone system.
When to replace
If the cabling is in poor condition, the phones are very old or you want new features (display, video, programmable keys), moving to PoE IP phones usually pays off. For critical equipment, such as emergency phones, check with the manufacturer and maintainer that the gateway is compatible and reliable.
Frequently asked questions
Does fax work over IP?
It can, with gateways that support the right fax protocols, though reliability depends on the network. Many businesses now replace it with fax-to-email.
