WiFi 6, 6E and 7: which do you need?

Every WiFi generation promises more speed. But what really changes is the ability to handle lots of devices at once. Here's what each one brings.

Guide · 5 min read · Updated

The generations

  • WiFi 5 (802.11ac): still very common; good speed on 5 GHz but struggles with many devices.
  • WiFi 6 (802.11ax): more efficient with many connected devices; today's recommended baseline.
  • WiFi 6E: WiFi 6 with access to the less congested 6 GHz band.
  • WiFi 7 (802.11be): wider channels and simultaneous connection across bands; built for very high speeds and low latency.

The device matters too

A WiFi 7 access point only delivers its benefits to compatible phones and computers. Other devices connect using the standard they support.

The 6 GHz band

It offers more free channels but has shorter range and passes through walls less well. Its use depends on it being authorised and on device support.

What matters more than the generation

  • Enough access points, well positioned.
  • Wired back to the network.
  • A well-configured network: channels, power, separate networks.

Our recommendation

For most homes and businesses, a good WiFi 6 or 6E design is more than enough. WiFi 7 makes sense for studios, demanding offices or new installations designed to last many years.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to replace all my devices?

No. New access points are backwards-compatible with older devices.
